ESPR priority / horizontal work

Electronics & ICT and the Digital Product Passport.

ICT products and other electronics are priority areas under ESPR, while the working plan also includes horizontal work on repairability and recycled content for electrical and electronic equipment.

DPPProduct-specific rules determine final fields
Important: Electronics are not a single DPP product category with one universal date. Existing ecodesign measures, future product-specific acts and horizontal rules must be checked product by product.

Data worth organising now

  • Model and component identifiers
  • Repair, spare-parts and software/support information
  • Critical material and recycled-content data
  • Energy/ecodesign information already required
  • Compliance declarations, test reports and firmware/product documentation

Preparation workflow

01

Map existing obligations

Start from existing ecodesign, energy-labelling and product-safety data before creating new fields.

02

Connect components

Link replaceable parts, batteries and critical components to the product model.

03

Version digital data

Plan for product and software information that may change during the product lifecycle.

Why early preparation matters

When a final product-specific measure arrives, the difficult part is often not generating a QR code. It is locating reliable data across suppliers, engineering, compliance, ERP/PIM systems and product documentation. A reusable product-data model reduces that implementation risk.

Frequently asked questions

Does every electronics & ict product need a DPP today?

Electronics are not a single DPP product category with one universal date. Existing ecodesign measures, future product-specific acts and horizontal rules must be checked product by product.

What should companies prepare now?

Start with clean product identifiers, supplier data ownership, materials/composition, technical and compliance records, and a structure that can be mapped to future product-specific DPP fields.

Is the indicative ESPR timeline a legal deadline?

No. The working-plan timeline is an indicative adoption timeline for measures. The binding obligations and application dates come from the final delegated act or other applicable EU legislation.

Last reviewed: September 2026. Indicative working-plan dates are not substitutes for final legal application dates.
